Workout Clothes Lookbook

workout clothes lookbook
For the longest time I’ve stuck to wearing black workout clothes at the gym, hoping my voluptuous thighs would look slimmer. In fact, I stocked up on the same outfit, buying duplicates of my trusty black H&M workout vest and Nike Legend Tights. I didn’t even think that to the outside world it looked like I was wearing the same clothes to the gym everyday, tragic. I’m happy to report I have since expanded my workout wardrobe with a variety of colours and patterns and it inspired me to create a mini workout clothes lookbook for you all. I have put together outfits for different workouts as my gym routine is as varied as my workout clothes now are.

For Weight Lifting

I love the loose fit of this top as it allows me to twist, turn, push and pull without restricting me in any way. It also skims over the belly rolls when I’m doing my ab routine and hides the bloat when I’m having a ‘fat day’. The low scoop of back of the top shows off my back muscles as I’m doing pull downs so I love wearing this outfit on back and shoulder day. I almost forgot to say, the top is reversible! You can either wear the yellow side or switch it for the orange side. Two tops in one, absolute bargain! The leggings are great too, but I avoid them when I’m doing squats and deadlifts as they’re not the most opaque. Lunges, leg press, leg extensions and curls are fine however.

For Spinning

When I’m doing a sweaty workout such as spinning, wearing cotton is out of the question. I love the sweat-wicking material of this top and tights. The side panel print on the top which is inspired by jellyfish highlights my curves and draws the eye to my waist, which I love. The top is by a relatively new brand called Bella Kinesis which was started by two lovely girls I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. For every item of clothing they sell, they fund a business education for a woman in rural India – I love that! These 10k run tights from Sweaty Betty have a sheen to them, basically creating a contour for your legs making you look slimmer! The sheen focuses the light down the centre of your leg and creates a shadow on your inner and outer thigh, giving you that streamlined look.

For HIIT

Can we just take a moment to appreciate how great these capris make my bum look?! Move over JLo… This whole outfit is by a brand called Lornah Sportswear and I absolutely love the African inspired prints. They’re super flattering and super empowering. I love wearing this outfit for HIIT style workouts as the material is lightweight which helps keep me cool and it’s not restrictive which gives me no excuse not to do burpees. Lornah was created by Lornah Kiplagat, a multiple World Champion in Athletics who ran her way out of poverty in Africa. I can’t help but channel my inner Lioness when I wear this outfit.

For Yoga

The quality and beauty of Sweaty Betty clothes is just superior. This vest is super soft, I often find myself stroking my stomach when I’m wearing it and quickly stop myself before anyone asks if I’m pregnant. I’m not, for the record. The colour is perfect for Spring & Summer and sets off my post-Ghana tan perfectly. The top has a built in bra and is ruched at the front and the back which means it can worn longer or shorter. I had when tops fall down to my shoulders when I’m in downward dog but the snug fit and ruching of this top keeps it firmly in place. I love these capris and how they’re darker around the bum and hips and get brighter as they go down. The purple/red/blue ombre is just gorgeous and the butterfly print is super feminine.

For Running

I must confess, I don’t actually run in just a sports bra. Shock horror. I just thought it looked good for this outfit so don’t hate me, OK? Good. I was recently sent a pair of compressions from 2XU and it was my first time ever wearing compressions. They are a struggle to get on, so maybe get ready before hitting the gym as you’ll be sat on the changing room floor struggling to even get them over your foot. Once on however, they fit like a dream. I was expected to feel like I had boa constrictor snakes wrapped around my thighs, but the MCS technology provides targeted compression over key muscles and tendons. I love wearing these when running as the compression technology increases blood circulation, reduces fatigue through reduced muscle oscillation (vibration) and warms up your muscles faster pre-workout. This towel is another one of my faves. One side is for gym equipment and the other side is for you. Such a simple idea, yet brilliant. No longer will you have a mental panic trying to remember which side of the towel you wiped the bench down of someone else’s sweat when you want to mop your own forehead. Keep those nasty, sweaty gym germs away from your precious skin. Plus it has a handy pocket which I love because I am ALWAYS leaving my gym locker key around. True story, I once had to leave my car in the gym carpark because my gym swab-key was on my car keys and I left them somewhere in the gym. Luckily someone found them the next day, but being car-less for 24 hours was not fun.

This is my first ever lookbook. Let me know what you think and if you like this sort of post. I might try to do more in future. What are your favourite pieces to wear in your workout wardrobe? Let me know your outfits in the comments below, I’m feeling spendy and I’d love some inspiration.
