5 Beauty Tips for Winter Skin Care

Winter is coming. As the months get colder and the weather gets harsher, not only are we more prone to colds and flu, but our skin goes through a lot too. Icy temperatures, harsh winds and drying central heating means we need to make some changes to our skincare routine to give our a skin a little extra TLC. That’s why today I wanted to share with you my top 5 beauty tips to care for your skin in Winter.

1. Always wear SPF

It can be easy to retire the SPF to the back of the bathroom cabinet in Winter as the sun hardly seems to make an appearance. However, the sun’s UV rays are present all year and can cause burning, ageing, wrinkles and skin cancer so it’s important to still wear your SPF in Winter. I’ve been using the Aveda Daily Light Guard Defense Fluid SPF30. It’s lightweight, fast-absorbing, is designed to defend against free radical damage and is 74% naturally derived.

2. Avoid chapped lips

With central heating, sharp winds and just generally harsh conditions, our poor lips go through a lot in Winter. Always keep a moisturising lip balm in your bag and regularly apply. I’ve been keeping it simple with the Nivea Hydra Care Lip Balm. If your lips are chapped, use a sugar scrub to remove any dry dead skin. Apply Vaseline and leave on for 10 minutes before removing with a warm, slightly damp cotton wool pad. This will act as a moisturising mask for your lips.

3. Give your water an antioxidant boost

You need to keep up your water intake in Winter to help avoid your skin becoming dull and dehydrated. Adding a water infusion blend like Rawberries can naturally flavour the water and give it an antioxidant boost. Rawberries is a 100% natural blend of berries ground into a super fine powder that you can mix into your water to get the full benefit of 2.5x more antioxidants than green tea and 4.4x more than 50g of blueberries to help fight cell damage. Rawberries is also rich in vitamins A, C and K1 which all help to nourish your skin. It does have a bitter taste so I like to add a pinch of stevia to mine.

4. Keep your skin moisturised

Choose a good quality, rich body moisturiser to keep your skin feeling soft, paying particular attention to rougher areas like elbows and the heels of your feet. For your face, pamper yourself with nourishing face masks. I’ve been loving using the Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask at night after cleansing and exfoliating to really moisturise my skin as I sleep. In the morning my skin feels amazing whenever I use this, I just love it! As a treat on a weekend, I give my skin an extra boost with the Origins Original Skin Retexturizing Mask with Rose Clay which gives me a lovely glow.

5. Take a skin-boosting fish oil supplement

Care for your skin from the inside out with a good quality fish oil supplement. The fatty acids in fish oil help to hydrate the skin and ward off inflammation, wrinkles and acne. Eat fatty fish like salmon, tuna, trout and sardines a few times a week and take a good quality fish oil supplement to top up your Omega-3 fatty acids. I like this Ultimate Oil Blend from Udo’s Choice.

This is how I’m caring for my skin now that we’ve hit Winter and so far I’ve managed to avoid dry, dull skin. If you’ve started to see the drying effects of the colder months, these tips will help to restore your skin back to it’s moisturised, soft and glowy state.

Omega 3 oils do wonders for my skin so I make sure I consume them with my food regularly but I also use facial oils which are rich in omega 3 as this also helps. The key is really to work from inside out. Nutrition first and then nourishing moisturizers/facial oils.

I 100% agree with you Petra! With things like Omega 3 it’s important to get it from your food first and foremost, but good quality facial oils can definitely help top up the benefits for your skin. The same as vitamins, food first, supplements and or creams/oils second! Thanks for sharing :) xx
